Deepwater hosts I-Rod night golf tournament

2013-10-28

At various times throughout history there have been those among us willing to attempt endeavors most would never have dreamt of. Circumnavigating the globe? Heavier-than-air flight? How about the first guy to eat a jalepeño pepper? On this day, though, we give thanks to the first dude who waited until nightfall, sneaked onto a pitch-black golf course and smacked a glow-in-the-dark ball right into the pages of history. If not for that courageous act, we could never have experienced I-Rod’s second Annual I-Rod “Night Clubbing” “Glow-Ball Warming” nighttime golf tournament on October 25 at Houston’s Bear Creek Golf World’s President’s Course.

In honor of this momentous achievement, I-Rod packed dozens of employees, customers, agents and hangers-on into poorly-illuminated golf carts on a frighteningly dark course and plied them with drinks and glow-balls. In fact, about the only things well-lit were the golfers. Before turning the herd loose, I-Rod held a putting contest for a new iPad. The short putt just over a slight rise shamed the entire field of contestants except for Curt Gardiner of SunBelt Stud Welding, who waltzed away with the prize. Hole sponsors for this year included Acadiana Coatings and Supply, FarWest Corrosion Control, EZ Line Pipe Supports, Marsh & McLennan Agency, NACE International and Sunbelt Stud Welding. After the tournament, prizes were awarded for the best and lousiest scores. The losing group brought shame to their ancestors for their pathetic effort, but the victorious group - featuring Dan Gamez, Dennis McCarty and Steven Gravis - earned the undying respect of a grateful nation for their winning score. Both of these horribly mismatched teams got nifty prizes, as did Rodrigo Garza for having the longest drive of the night. Immediately following the awards, everyone packed the clubhouse to remove any remaining sobriety.. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Third Annual I-Rod Night Golf Tournament, and we hope to once again see everyone there.
